Guardian Angel

  1. GUARDIAN ANGEL - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears on the cover of the fanzine, "Weirdbook," 23-24, published by Paul Ganley.

FANZINES: Through the good graces and encouragement of most fanzine and small press book publishers, like Paul Ganley, who asked me for lots of artwork, my confidence as an illustrator grew. I am grateful for the opportunity and the freedom they gave me to think creatively, to practice, to develop whatever talent I have for making science fiction and fantasy artwork. You may be surprised, but "fan" publishers paid well and they paid in advance.

PUBLISHERS: Among the professional editors I dealt with, some were friendly and polite, allowing me complete artistic freedom and paid promptly, and I truly appreciate them. I also found editors who were headstrong, or abusive, or ignorant beyond belief. There was one editor who would not even allow that I was trying to earn a living and expected to be paid!

This drawing is my tribute to all the fanzine editors who, like angels in a never-never land, laid a path for me to the world of fantasy illustration.
